DOTW: Sepalcure, Feeling That I Know So Well

At this point there’s little doubt in my mind that Paul Rose and his crew at Hotflush Recordings have some of the best ears for talent in dance music today. Not only have they brought breakout talents Joy Orbison and Mount Kimbie to the masses, they’re constantly championing fresh talents like Sigha, George Fitzgerald, and Sepalcure. The latter most is the Brooklyn-based duo of Praveen Sharma and Travis Stewart who make warm and cinematic steppers that reference shoegaze atmospherics with the ease of artists who find inspiration far from the vibrating bassbins that captivate many of their contemporaries. “Feeling That I Know So Well” just barely missed the cut for their Love Pressure EP but is no less affecting or well written. Balmy, almost trembling synth tones swell and ebb like blood rushing into a young romantic’s face as soulful vocal specters haunt the upper registers. Only the hand claps and woodblocks, which click together like Swiss engineering, keep the track anchored in the present while the lyrics (eg. “Will I see you tomorrow?”) suggest a oft-repeated memory being replayed for the hundredth time. And this is what they consider a runner up. A huge thank you to Sepalcure and Hotflush Recordings for sharing this great track.

Big tune! “Love Pressure” has been one of my favorite releases of the year so far, and “Feeling That I Know So Well” is absolutely on par with the tracks that made it on wax.
