[3024]
Yes! Another tune that puts the step back in dubstep and this one is exquisite. “Embrace/Hijack” is the latest left turn by Dave Huismans, aka 2562, whose alias is derived from the area code where he lives in The Hague. After a handful of singles and a full length for Tectonic, this latest effort is brought to us by fellow Nederlander Martyn and his 3024 label. Using a palette of icy stabs and nostalgia-inducing pads, Huismans paints a fluttering soundscape on a canvas of driving, syncopated rhythms.
On the flip side, “Hijack” achieves a frantic mood at times while keeping the minimal approach, this time with more traditional rhythms. Like the a-side, everything here seems to be arranged with a light touch, no two elements colliding. Though you’ll find this release in the dubstep section of most shops, neither side can really be categorized as such. Still, this is the kind of thing we like to hear from a genre that has mutated into some very interesting animals.
I’m warming up to dubstep a little and this is the stuff I’m digging, moody deep stuff.
totally love this.
Love this! It’s nice to hear that shuffle coming back! But – I’m really hoping this style won’t “mutate” into the same kind of coffee table\cocktail lounge aesthetic that has plagued some of the previous “Nuum” (TM Simon Reynolds) styles…it easily could in less talented hands.
great release; “hijack” is similar in spirit to another great recent future-step release, Scuba’s “Tense”. Dave also killed it over the weekend!
AY are you talking about the dubwar show? because i concur, he was wicked… especially the last couple tracks… whew!
2562’s album on tectonic is also amazing. looking back, i’m surprised it didn’t make many year-end lists.
