Rod Modell does like to keep busy, doesn’t he? Less than a month ago, his Echospace project with Stephen Hitchell released an ambitious Silent World soundtrack album, and just a year ago Modell dropped the Hash Bar Loops solo album. It’s soon to be followed by another LP, Sommer, also for Soma Quality Music. Reassuringly, Modell isn’t the kind of producer who put something out just to stay on stores’ shelves, a fact bolstered by the album’s teaser tracker, “Jeanneau.” While not actually on the album, its strength suggests the tracks that are have the potential to be stupendous. Caked in hiss and woven with bird calls, “Jeanneau” is the kind of humid, dub-influenced techno that evokes jungles and tropics more than the permafrost of previous pursuits. It’s as forceful as it is pretty, asserting itself with a sizable kick and chord that leap rather than saunter. Quality stuff, in other words. Thanks to Modell and Soma for making this available.
