Exclusive Download of the Week: Garrett David, The Pressure

It’s often enjoyable when a producer writes an ode to a club or club night that’s proven particularly important for them. Aril Brikha and DJ Harvey’s respective “Berghain” tracks immediately come to mind, and so does the latest 12″ from Chicago’s Garrett David. Released on Stripped & Chewed, The Queen! Tracks references both the sound and atmosphere of Queen!, Smart Bar’s weekly gay-oriented club night at Smart Bar where David is a resident. Exuberant, dramatic, and punctuated by syllables from the night’s notorious host, Ruby Dee, “That Queen! Track” transports listeners to this specific locale in a way no photo or Vine could. This week’s exclusive download, “The Pressure” from the same EP, is less geo-specific but offers plenty of hints as to why labels like Balance and Persnickety Sounds have recruited the young producer. Strongly influenced by an excitable strain of garage house, the tune packs a series of neon synth leads, smooth pads, and a bevy of vocal samples — all underscored by a snub-nosed bass line — into just a bit more than four minutes. And while its contents are many, David’s deft hand at arrangement avoids overload in favor of a short and sweet ride. If you’re ever in Chicago you should make sure to check out Queen! because it’ll sound more than a little bit like “The Pressure.” Our thanks to Stripped & Chewed and Garrett David for the track.
