LWE’s Guide to the Unsound Festival NYC
Having put together Eastern Europe’s top avante-garde music festival in Krakow, Unsound Festival founder Mat Schulz took on a new challenge: bringing his festival to NYC. From February 4th through the 14th, across venues and art spaces around the city, the Unsound Festival New York will offer a finely tailored selection of shows, screenings and discussions that are a refreshing respite from more populist dance music-related festivals. As one of Unsound’s proud media sponsors, we’re offering a run down of the festival with our favorites highlighted.

Kind curators that they are, the fine folks behind the Unsound Festival have an event that’s kind even to the emptiest of wallets. At noon on Saturday, February 6th, the experimental German trio Groupshow (known separately as Jan Jelinek, Andrew Pekler and Hanno Leichtmann) will perform an 8 hour long improvised piece to accompany Andy Warhol’s film, “Empire.” The event takes place at Le Poisson Rouge (158 Bleecker St.) and is completely free. For a hint as to what you can expect from this massive undertaking, check out “Pet Hair Magnet,” generously made available by Groupshow.
LWE Podcast 04: Leonid Retiring This Week
Don’t miss your last chance to download our fourth podcast, which came from Irish deepster Leonid. His impeccable selection of deep house grooves is being retired this Friday, January 29nd at 10 a.m. (CST)
LWE Podcast 03: Nick Höppner Retiring This Week
Ostgut Ton manager, Panorama Bar resident and fine producer in his own right, Nick Höppner really set the pace for our podcast series with LWE Podcast 03. Make sure to grab it before it retires this week, Friday, January 22nd at 10 a.m. (CST)
Download an exclusive track from nsi.
Few electronic musicians have earned the title of “mad scientists” as thoroughly as nsi., the venerable duo of Tobias Freund and Max Loderbauer. Their productions are often the results of studio experimentation, allowing their analog synths and vintage drum machines to run wild and form tracks almost incidentally — the journey being much more important than the end destination. On Friday February 5th, as part of the Unsound Festival, nsi. will bring their sonic tinkering (and much of their analog gear) to New York City to provide the soundtrack for Andy Warhol’s seminal film, “The Kiss,” alongside Detroit techno legend Carl Craig, who will do the same for Warhol’s “The Blowjob.” There are 7:30pm and 9:30pm showings at The Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater, both of which will probably sell out, so get your tickets while you can.
LWE Podcast 02: dOP retiring this week
If you want to hear the Parisian trio’s first ever podcast, an eclectic and compelling mixtape spanning the entirety of their record collections, make haste and download LWE Podcast 02 now. It will be retired Friday, January 15th at 10 am (CST).
Win 2 Tickets to FABRIC 50: Martyn Launch Party
A club like Fabric doesn’t hit a milestone without putting on a great party, and the occasion of the club’s 50th mix, put together by Martyn, is another classic example. LWE has snagged a copy of the comp and two tickets to the gig, which features Martyn, Pépé Bradock, Kode 9, and Actress in Room […]
LWE Begins Retiring Its Early Podcasts
As LWE’s podcast series approaches the second anniversary of its inauguration, we thought now was the time to let the mixes which launched the series in March 2008 to briefly shine again, and then retire them. Although they cost only your time and bandwidth, these podcasts can be treasured, sought after bits, especially if they’re no longer available. So with each new podcast published we’ll be putting one from the front of the line in deep storage. We’re starting this week with #01, the banging, quickly paced mix from Detroit’s incomparable Terrence Dixon. On Friday, January 8th at 10 a.m. CST, we’ll remove the podcast from the server, so make sure to snap it up while you still can.
LWE Podcast 38: Thomas Andersen
After many hours spent scoring your mixes, our panel of eight judges has chosen a winning set: Congratulations to Thomas Andersen of Denmark, the winner of LWE’s second annual podcast competition. His mix grabbed our attention the most and earns him three Fabric CDs from 2009. In second place we have Mr. Kaizen of Toronto, who wins two Fabric CDs from 2009, and Eddie Bacal, also of Toronto, takes third and one Fabric CD from 2009. Congratulations to all the winners! Let’s move on to the podcast.
LWE’s Top 10 Albums of 2009
It seems once again artists have looked past shriveling album sales and pooh poohed format worries while creating a truly outstanding crop of longplayers. Whether exploring the sinews connecting electronic music and jazz, amalgamating traditional African and house sounds, gearing up a set of club bangers or diving into unknown recesses in listeners’ heads, the 10 albums LWE’s reviewing staff chose represent the best 2009 had to offer.
LWE’s Top 25 Tracks of 2009 (5-1)
As the Internet allows for the fragmentation of tastes and musical scenes to increase with each passing year, critical attempts to address an overarching annual narrative seem as if they’re becoming a thing of the past. Instead we get something closer to an episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” with several intricate sub-plots coexisting and influencing each other to enjoyable, unpredictable ends. 2009 found house developing still deeper on one hand and running at surface level on the other, some of its adherents picked away by a Latin strain which grew rather unwieldy. UK bass music of all sorts reached further afield for its influences, adding boogie, house and freestyle into its repertoire while dubstep proper refined its sound as the wobble variety began to grate. Techno grew harder, weirder, and more fiercely independent than most had seen in years, and many of its talents continued their courtship with stepping musics. And by the end of the year, there was more than enough excellent tracks to declare 2009’s yield both fruitful and memorable. After looking back, we’ve chosen these 25 tracks as the best this year had to offer.
Reminder: Three and a half days left to submit a podcast
Just a quick not to remind everyone that submissions to our podcast competition are due no later than 12 p.m. CST on December 12th and that no late entries will be scored. We’re really excited at the mixes we received so far and look forward to more challengers in the days ahead. Good luck!

LWE’s 2nd Annual Podcast Competition Begins
LWE’s podcast series is a favorite feature of the site for readers, artists and staff alike, one of the few throwbacks to the halcyon days of our mp3 blogging youth. But it also means we rarely post mixes unless they’re part of the series, generally leaving it to blogs like mnml ssgs, Random Circuits and Infinitestatemachine to showcase the rest. As part of our year end round up, we would like to bridge the gap between the two schools of blogging and ask you, our readers, to contribute a mix for our podcast series. Whether you’re touring Europe every weekend or bedroom mixing for yourself, we want to hear your mixes — and the best one will be our last podcast of the year. The winner will also receive a prize package from Fabric. Interested? Good, we thought you might be. Full rules and deadline after the jump.
