01. Namlook, “Subharmonic Atoms” (Pépé Bradock Bug Remix) [Macro] (buy)subharmonicatoms.jpg
In case you need reminding how otherworldly talented Pépé Bradock is, check his remix of Peter Namlook’s “Subharmonic Atoms.” Announcing his composition with a dramatic swoosh, Bradock unleashes a dizzying array of prismatic tones bent, pulled and punctuated by bouncy beeps. With the melodic floor dropping out and careening from side to side, it might be difficult to play out or take seriously; but Bradock’s pinball game of a tune is worth more for the sense of wonder it will instill in listeners.

02. Daso, “Pars Tensa” [Connaisseur Recordings] (buy)daso_tinnitus_front_1200.jpg
Bursting through each categorical box he gets put into like the Kool Aid Man, Daso Franke confounds yet again with “Pars Tensa,” the achingly beautiful b-side to his “Tinnitus” single. It’s a warm and whimsical blend of Latin flair (Flamenco guitar leads, wood block clinks), heartburn bass modulations and whisking 808 hi-hats. This one cries out for a terrace party, another round of mojitos, and many DJs’ crates.

03. LoSoul, “Raw Beauty” [Playhouse] (buy)losoulrawbeauty.jpg
I know this tune is nearly a decade old and its Playhouse re-release is meant to showcase the new Luke Solomon remix. Still, the sharp elbows of LoSoul’s granular loops and mollifying pads are so immediate and fitting of the current lo-fi, deeply-inclined house climate. “Raw Beauty”‘s repress reminds who all the revival is built upon, grimy knives out.

04. Agnès & Lee Van Dowski, “Radio Graceland” [Leena Music] (buy)00-lee_van_dowski_and_agnes_-_louder_elvis-leena06-web-2008-a-front.jpg
While the A side of Agnès, Lee Van Dowski and Leena’s latest has been gathering buzz, it’s the delightfully complicated “Radio Graceland” which caught my attention. Not only does its unusual sound neatly sum up Agnès and LVD’s best qualities, it’s also impressively catchy. Dominated by a charged yet blurry vocal sample and rumbling with thick percussion, the track’s languorous dub effects keeps the mood relaxed and measured. Definitely not to be slept on.

05. Henrik Schwarz & Amampondo, “I Exist Because of You” (Dixon’s Stripped Down Version) [Innervisions] (buy)henrikschwarziexistbecauseofyou.jpg
Earlier this year I predicted a resurgence of tribal beats and African themes and thus far I’ve been correct. Schwarz is careful in his use of these motifs; his arrangements (and Dixon’s slimmer revision) embody the lively spirit essential to rootsy music while avoiding mere tokenism (he truly feels it). Not to mention it’s a beautiful move and shaker, of course, with a fat tailed bass line slinking between clamorous drums and chants. Hopefully the rest of the bandwagon takes heed from Schwarz’s examples.
