It’s been nearly a year since Rush Hour released their sprawling Anthony “Shake” Shakir retrospective, Frictionalism 1994-2009. Having hopefully marinaded to perfection in contemporary dance music’s hive mind, the compilation now serves as a jump-off point for two of Shake’s most perceptible descendants, Falty DL and Space Dimension Controller. The Dutch label/shop conglomerate once again makes a case for its impeccable curatorial skills — both producers make versatile tracks that turn on a dime and are perfect choices for reworking Shake’s perennially shapeshifting catalog.
Falty DL’s version of “Assimilated” treads close to the original — the jumble of antsy congas and hi-hats and that repeating languid chord are relatively intact. The NY-based producer accentuates the track’s swing, largely via the addition of bass weight, as its rhythm is spaced around fragmented subs and an intermittent wriggling bass line. Those looking for his signature moodiness might want to check elsewhere, however. Shake’s original is bubbly as it is, and the remix is more a rearrangement of preexisting elements than an assertion of a trademark. Meanwhile, Space Dimension Controller takes the luxuriant hip-hop of “Detroit State of Mind” and makes it entirely his own, reserving its groggy chords as a backdrop for a plodding, relatively empty house rhythm. If you’ve heard the producer’s tracks before you know he loves a slow build, and this remix is no different. Its initial rhythm gradually gets so hectic it feels ready to burst, and burst it does — into that familiar funked-up bass line noodling. It’s highly predictable, but excusable. Few are presently making music this limber and one-trick pony accusations feel a little premature, especially for such a young producer. Of the two, though, Falty DL’s effort shines through as a restrained acknowledgment of the original’s quality.
Where is the photo from?
It’s somewhere in India, I’m not sure where. Beautiful, no?
Beautiful, yes!(the photo). Great remix of a great track.
i don’t think people should remix shake’s records, they’re fine on their own.
Good thing then it’s not you who decides
