When it comes to the wide definition of techno, Arne Weinberg’s name doesn’t necessarily roll off the tongue. But when you look at the tighter aperture of deep techno Weinberg’s name is right up there with Vince Watson, Quince, Steve Rachmad and the like. What’s slightly different about him, though, is his nuanced approach to music as well as a rejection of trend-influenced decision making, such as the German producer’s move to Glasgow two years ago. More importantly is the sonic landscape that Weinberg has chosen to inhabit, a brand of deep electronic music he’s been championed on his now defunct AW-Recordings and the recent start up of Diametric.
Weinberg’s most recent release, Integrity Constraint Part 1, is on neither though. This first in a series of 12″s arrives on aDepth audio and features two original tracks in the aforementioned vein and a remix from Kirk Degiorgio. Degiorgio’s remix of the unreleased “Paralyzed Tribes” translates Weinberg’s track to club vernacular, using booming kicks and a treated vocal that comes on sinister while urging the “paralyzed generation” to “come on and dance.” But if the opening threatens to kick it up into white noise bombast the subsequent melody reveals a subtly that ties it back to Weinberg. “The Circle” actually raises the tempo but manages to project a calmer atmosphere as cumulus pads, staccato percussion, and serene synth melodies counteract the bpm. Weinberg’s “Desdemonia” uses broken electro rhythms as a base for further melodic development as minor key chords create a striking palette for wistful strings, analogue bass contractions and percussive melodies. The result harkens back to early B12 or Plaid with a nod to even Rhythim is Rhythim, but without sounding overly derivative. That Weinberg reportedly has a release slated for Transmat could make things all the more interesting.
This is a great package. Last year’s “Avenger’s Return” record on Technoir was also sterling. Weinberg’s on a run!
