Swiss producer Agnès might not be a bold-faced name for many dance music audiences, but he’s been a favorite of underground house DJs since getting his start in the early aughts. It’s not that his classically-influenced yet forward thinking tracks run contrary to contemporary trends; if anything, his music is tailor made for the nostalgic period we’re in. Still, his discography, which includes releases for labels including Plak Records, Resopal Red, Perspectiv, his own Sthlmaudio Recordings and a wealth of remixes, is like a cache of secret weapons for DJs in the know. With any luck his latest record will bring him wider acclaim: A Million Horses on Drumpoet Community is the debut full-length for his Cavalier moniker, and it trades in the sort of dusty, groove-heavy house that ought to drive DJs and dancers wild. This week’s download is a sneak peak from the album. “Uzunyayla (Hallucinatory Narcosis)” stomps with the best of them, but does so under a delicately twinkling melodies — rubbernecking bass notes and organ chords intertwined with chiming vamps and balmy strings. Even the bawdy spoken vocals arriving in the second half can’t take away from such a distinguished composition. Our thanks to Agnès and Drumpoet Community for making this one available.
Cavalier, “Uzunyayla (Hallucinatory Narcosis)”
