French DJ and producer Chloé Thevenin is a bit of a dark horse. Her releases over the past five years have come with little to no fanfare but have been more than warmly received. As part of the Kill The DJ crew she has now released two very accomplished albums, her most recent, One In Other took little regard for what an album by a techno DJ should sound like, including lush downtempo moments and abstract meanderings amongst the club friendly tracks. “Diva,” from the album was one of the highlights for its spooked out, pace-conscious meander through blood and toil-wrought slo-mo house. This week’s download treat is the Alex Smoke remix of “Diva,” heightening the spook factor to knife-wielding, paranoiac levels as the Glaswegian ups the tempo and adds his own meticulous, glitchy details to the brooding vocals from Chloé. Somewhere between an acid house death rattle and a late Halloween present, Mr Smoke focuses his evil eye on “Diva” with claves so sharp they could shave off your eyebrows and a delicious broken beat drum arrangement that transforms the menacing original in to a full blown club monster.
