To evaluate Danilo Plessow — Motor City Drum Ensemble to his fans — strictly by his own productions is to potentially believe his musical influences are focused on the output of Midwestern house and techno producers. Thankfully !K7’s DJ-Kicks mix series got the popular producer to reveal his full hand, a smattering of funk, IDM, dub, free jazz and cinematic orchestration sandwiched between house tunes. Although the CD isn’t packed with exclusives like many contemporary mixes are, it does offer a few tasty tidbits that wouldn’t have existed otherwise. This week’s download is one of them, Plessow’s edit of Philippe Sarde’s “Le Cortège Et Course,” originally written for the 1972 film “Cesar et Rosalie.” Murky bass patterns shift listlessly as synthesizer arpeggios and droning strings lace things together, occasionally punctured by plucked string movements and urgent woodwind blasts. Fans of Âme’s most classically inclined tracks should dig into this one quick. Thanks to Mr Plessow and !K7 for hooking us up.
