Studio !K7 has been releasing its DJ-Kicks mix CDs since 1995, featuring entries by everyone from Carl Craig and Stacey Pullen to Tiga and Erlend Øye. By aiming at chin-strokers and party-goers alike, DJ-Kicks twisted how we came to understand home-listening DJ mixes. For the 31st entry in their illustrious series K7! tapped Juan MacLean, who made the shift from hard living rocker to burgeoning house producer backed by a live band, recording for James Murphy’s DFA label. “Feel So Good,” the mix’s exclusive track, is one of his most sizzling numbers yet, benefiting immensely from its blend of techy stabs, a balmy bass line, Nancy Whang’s knowing vocals and a rhythm loop from late drummer Jerry Fuchs. Both a memorial to Fuchs and a promise to keep on shaking into the future, this tune is sure to light up dance floors this summer. Our thanks to The Juan MacLean and !K7 for making this track available. Those who looking for a sample of Juan’s mix skills should check him out tonight at Green Dolphin Room in Chicago.
