Although new, well-curated festivals appear every year, those of us in North America tend to rely first and foremost on a few old standbys: DEMF, Unsound, Decibel, and Montréal’s MUTEK, the flagship festival of an enterprise with wings in Spain, Mexico, and Chile. Since its founding in 2000, MUTEK has focused on a wide range of electronic performance (predominantly live, though the eminent likes of Theo Parrish and James Holden have been afforded DJ sets in the past), from hushed, experimental evenings to all-night club events. This strategy has a number of advantages, firstly allowing artists a chance to perform their most ambitious projects, many as premieres. There are, of course, several in this year’s edition (MUTEK’s site lists 13 world premieres, 14 North American premieres and four Canadian premieres). Beyond this, the festival has booked an exciting array of artists, from established names to young and emerging talents, many of whom are LWE favorites. The collisions between approaches, ages, and genres has always made for an interesting five days, and this year’s installment, which runs from May 29th to June 2nd, looks to be no different. As proud media partners, we have selected our picks for this year’s edition below. You can find out even more information and purchase tickets on MUTEK’s website.

I got my pass for the weekend and I hope that Laurel Halo plays Sex Mission at the Metropolis. If she does so, she’ll burn the place into the ground!
