The spirit of fun (and perhaps some other substances) must have been in the air when Matthew Dear and DJ duo M.A.N.D.Y. recorded “Buddies.” This happy-go-lucky tune shows not a whit of self consciousness about its goofy, Dear sung lyrics (sample: “Everybody is my buddy”) or its simple, balmy beat. Nor should there be: What some might deride as cheesy has its roots in Remain In Light-era Talking Heads material, particularly the interlocking funk guitar lines, jangling percussion and broadly sung backing vocals. Applying serious criteria to this slice of carefree pop house misses the point, but Get Physical have grumps covered. Littered with outtake vocals, Radio Slave’s remix contains the madcap vibe inside tight percussion and sonorous piano/synth chords, recalling Melchior Productions tracks. Remixes by M.A.N.D.Y., Smash TV and SIOPSIS, however, struggle to achieve the same balance and can be skipped.
Couldn’t agree more. Summertime tune
