Whether as Soundhack, Sound Stream or half of Smith N Hack with Errorsmith, Frank Timm’s steady hand with an editor’s razor has been in great demand since the late 1990’s. But like a surgeon, Timm knows it’s not the number of cuts you make, but how well placed they are. His house/disco moniker, Sound Stream, has only two remixes and four releases to its name, the majority of which transcend their source material to take on dazzling and simple lives of their own. “‘Live’ Goes On,” his latest (and first since 2006), finds Timm taking more stylistic risks than on previous platters. But the plangent payout is plentiful and casts it as perhaps Sound Stream’s most accomplished release to date.
With the exception of tunes like the piercing “Love Jam,” much of Sound Stream’s work is born from irresistible sampled grooves shifting just enough to keep listeners’ attention. Where lead cut, “‘Live’ Goes On,” differs is in its construction: Stammering piano chords ring out almost disorderly before landing in a bed of likewise shivering samples, which vibrate together to release sensuous, deep melodies. When everything locks in place it’s like the first rush of frigid air after a sweaty evening out — refreshing and wholly different from what you’re used to. The B-side returns to more standard Sound Stream fare, though it’s still a treat. “Rainmaker” rides a plunging funk bass line and resonating piano chords into a well worn groove dessicated further by a strangle sizzling noise. Bubbly and glimmering, “Dance With Me” builds bits of Two Tons Of Fun’s “Do You Wanna Boogie, Hunh?” into a celebratory tune studded with sax stabs and criss-crossed by the pair’s soulful call to dance floor. Frank Timm’s latest as Sound Stream is a near masterpiece of editing prowess and innovation — a must purchase 12″ already snapped up and charted by DJs as stylistically diverse as Marcel Dettmann and Prosumer. Don’t miss out on one of the year’s best.
sounds like it’s begging for a remix. an enjoyable listen, sure (esp. when that incredibly deep bass comes in) but something about the juxtaposition of the abrupt chops in the piano sample don’t really “function” well with the “chill” elements of the rest of the track (e.g. the claps and tambourine pattern, the strings, the multi-bar melody)
I love this track! Brillant! I’ ll buy and play this one for sure! Thx!
Agreed — its exactly that odd juxtaposition that makes this track so appealing to me! Then again, I’m not at ALL sure how you’d go about mixing into it… those stabbing piano bits seem like they might overwhelm a lot of stuff and be hard to match up properly. Or perhaps I just don’t have the skillz.
skills or not, i just hear this (at the static bpm of an mp3 stream, may be different when you kick it up a bit) as totally incongruous with the kind of stuff i’d like to play around it. a more jacking, floor-minded edit/rework would be tite.
No doubt… but then it would sound like any number of other records! 😉
I spent half this year searching for those incredible songs I heard on a robert johnson podcast in april before finally finding out that soundstream was responsible, a couple of months back, so I’m very excited about this release… damn this has been one crazy year so far 😛 . (love jam/make love is even better though)
if you get to see him live you’re in for a unique experience. really unusual sounds, but totally fun.
this one killed it as his opener at Fabric…that bass was just “wooooaaah”.
Really like what he is doing. He modernizes that filtered / disco / funky house thing that was huge at the turn of the century. The times when Crydamour, Hatiras, Paul Johnson ruled the clubs…Really am happy to see this ‘sound’ coming back! So much more fun and funky than the last few years of sparseness…
Does any one has any idea of the sample used on Live Goes On ??
