[Rekids]
Toby Tobias first grabbed the dancefloor’s collective ear with the retro-tinged, Rekids released “A Close Shave,” especially with its Prins Thomas remiks. His “Dave’s Sex Bits” was more tepidly received, but yet another high profile remix, this time from Quiet Village, kept punters on his scent. “Nervoso EP,” his latest on Rekids, offers a few of the London producer’s finest tracks to date, and all without a remix safety net.
If flying solo causes Toby anxiety, it doesn’t show in his tunes. The “Nervoso EP” opens with the elliptically locomotive “Breakdown,” which splits the difference between early kraut electronics and iridescent cosmic disco. The leisurely tone carries on through the languid “Eleven,” a strong deep house statement pivoting on joyful percussive flourishes. A gritty and distorted 808 cadence scuffs up the Rhodes-led deep house aspirations of “Latenightmoves,” although scraping away lush tonality makes for a less enticing platter. Tobias’ brings out the 303 for the acid-pocked “Schweet,” whose saccharine riffs slowly unfurl themselves. His latest EP fruitfully explores a range of styles at head-nodding tempos, so it seems those nerves paid off.
