[~scape] While compilations by Soul Jazz and Skream have highlighted the rude bwoy and raved up ends of the dubstep oeuvre respectively, the Round Black Ghosts compilations have become the touchstone of the more subtle, techno influenced fare. Any discerning fan of the artists and the sound on display here will most likely already have […]

Andi Numan, Glass Roots
[Curl Curl] As an off-shoot from Moon Harbour Recordings, the Curl Curl label has for the past four years been an Antipodean based venture into releasing deep-house and techno with varying results. The tenth release on the label is the “Glass Roots” EP by New Zealander Andi Numan. It would be easy enough to tar […]
Kode9 vs LD, Bad/2 Bad
[Hyperdub] Steve Goodman’s Hyperdub imprint has been spearheading forward-thinking dubstep since 2004, though as Kode9 he has often been overshadowed by his first and most famous signing Burial. The 2008 release calendar for Hyperdub was marked by distinctively fresh sounding product from the likes of Flying Lotus collaborator Samiyam, Zomby, King Midas Sound and this […]
Scuba, A Mutual Antipathy Remixes 3
[Hotflush Recordings] With only a small handful of releases to his name previously, Paul Rose aka Scuba stepped up in 2008 with a somewhat slept-on masterwork of an album, A Mutual Antipathy. The remix packages (of which there are now four) have been serving to convert any late comers to the Scuba appreciation group, with […]
Alex Under, Azul Terio
[CMYK Musik] Alex Under has been dominating the harder end of the Spanish techno scene in recent years, his taut, kinetic productions gracing the discographies of Trapez, Apnea and Cmyk. “Azul Terio,” just his second release proper for 2008, finds Under in top form with three straight up floor cuts for the aforementioned Cmyk label, […]
LWE Podcast 11: Simon Flower
Simon Flower placed himself into DJing exile a number of years ago to hone his production techniques; and now with releases popping up on Poker Flat, Moon Harbour and Curl Curl that hard work is paying off. His tracks often have more parts packed into them than you could feasibly number and possess a style that provides a simultaneous contrast of light and dark elements. Having lived with Simon for a number of years and DJed alongside him at various clubs in New Zealand, I have long been aware of his faultless DJ style, so he seemed like an obvious choice for an exclusive LWE podcast. It didn’t take much coaxing to get him to put together this mix entitled “Act Natural,” which stitches together a selection of recent house and techno picks with a few older classics all assembled in his kinetic, fluid manner.
Guy Noir, Delusion EP
[District of Corruption] With a name that hints at subversive acts of espionage, Guy Noir (George Tsioutsias and Gower Ramsey) drop their second EP on the District of Corruption label, and suitably it is a cloak and dagger-themed affair. While the first Noir EP, “Flex” resonated well with DJs, it seemed more of a cerebral […]
Motorcitysoul, Solar/Hatohay EP
[Simple Records] You’d be forgiven for thinking that Motorcitysoul’s name is a nod in the direction of Detroit, but in actual fact the German duo of Matthias Vogt and C-Rock cite the Opel headquarters in Rüsselsheim, Frankfurt as the inspiration for their moniker. Nevertheless, their productions owe a debt to the cultural house heritage of […]
Bvdub, Wish I Was Here
[Millions of Moments] Like any self-respecting trainspotter worth their salt, when I come across a producer whose music moves me, I need to find out more about them. Learning that San Francisco native Bvdub has been producing music for less than two years came as a huge shock, but deeper digging revealed a musical pundit […]
Santiago Salazar/Silent Servant, Santuario/Lo Profundo
[Historia y Violencia] Imagining hitherto un-thought of couplings can be an amusing pastime; animals being able to cross species breed; chessgammon, the new board game for the weary pawn; vodka ibuprofen mixers, the preventative refresher. Of course they can prove to go horribly wrong too; “Alien Vs Predator” and a McCain/Palin ticket, just for example. […]
Swayzak, Bunny Girl EP
[Swayzak Recordings] It’s been over ten years since the duo of James Taylor and David Brown started releasing their particular brand of deep techno under their piss-take bastardization of Patrick Swayze’s name. They’ve toyed with dub, electroclash and hip-hop along the way, but generally their records have been brooding, emotive techno that is minimal in […]
Headhunter, Nomad
[Tempa] I have to admit that it took me a while to warm to dubstep. The spare hypnotics of Shackleton and the inimitable, tinder dry soundscapes sculpted by Burial immediately appealed but then their interpretations on the medium are truly unique. It wasn’t until hearing the likes of TRG and Martyn that I opened up […]
Introductions are in order (the Per Bojsen-Moller edition)
Hi, my name is Per Bojsen-Moller. I’m a half Danish, half New Zealand guy living in London doing my best to survive amidst what I am told is a knife crime infested, credit crunched, queuing obsessed city. I have been a writer of sorts since the mid-nineties and a DJ for several years longer. My […]
